Completing continuing professional development is a condition of holding a NSW property licence or certificate of registration.
That means the requirements apply not only to Class 1 and Class 2 agents, but also to assistant agents who hold a certificate of registration.
NSW Fair Trading has made the consequences of non-compliance clear. Agents and assistant agents who do not complete their annual CPD requirements may face suspension or cancellation of their licence or certificate, as well as a court-imposed penalty of up to $11,000.
CPD should therefore not be treated as a last-minute administrative task.
Each person needs to understand the requirements that apply to their licence or certificate, complete the correct training within the CPD year and retain evidence of completion.
For assistant agents, this includes completing a minimum of 3 units from the relevant Certificate IV qualification as part of the pathway towards becoming a Class 2 licence holder. Simply attending general industry training will not necessarily satisfy these requirements.
Class 1 and Class 2 agents must also complete the compulsory CPD topics that apply to their area of practice through an approved provider.
Although CPD is an individual responsibility, licensees-in-charge should have a practical system for monitoring compliance across the agency. This should include assistant agents, not only licensed agents.
The message is straightforward: know what applies to you, complete it before the deadline and keep your evidence.
CPD is not only about avoiding penalties. It helps agents and assistant agents build their knowledge, remain current and make better decisions in day-to-day practice.
Unique Training Providers provides approved compulsory CPD training for NSW property professionals, as well as qualification units to support assistant agents progressing towards a Class 2 licence.
